What is a franchise?
A franchise in basic terms is a working relationship between a franchisor, who has developed a business format and proved that it works, and an individual, the franchisee, who wants to replicate this business in their local area.
In general, a good franchise is simple to learn and operate and has an experienced franchisor operating the business.
The franchisor has invested both time and finances in developing a concept, tried that concept out by running a pilot scheme, generated operations manuals on how to successfully run the franchise, put together an effective training, support and ongoing mentoring programme run by an experienced team who have years of experience in working within the franchise industry.
For a franchisee, it means that they do not need the specific background or experience in their chosen industry/business. But they do need the ability to take on board all the training.
By means of the initial fee and on-going royalty payment the franchisee will have bought the licensed rights to operate the proven business in their exclusive territory.
Why franchise?
Franchising offers the freedom of running your own business whilst considerably reducing the associated risks.
- 80% of non-franchised business start-ups go out of business within 5 years
- Of the remaining 20%, 80% of them go out of business in the next five years
- 88% of franchise start-ups questioned stated that their franchise business was profitable

Franchising gives you the ability to quickly set up a new business. A francise business has a much better chances of success. Franchising offers you a proven business model - your success is directly related to your effort & commitment
What makes a good franchisee?
You need to have the drive, determination, energy, enthusiasm and the tenacity to develop a successful and profitable business.
Self-motivation and drive are the most important attributes needed by a franchisee. This needs to be complemented by the experience and support of an established franchise partner (the franchisor).
A franchise is self-employment. The franchisee will only get out of a franchise what they are prepared and committed to give. Effort put in is directly related to the rewards achieved.
Are you ready to become a franchisee?
Do you have sufficient capital available to raise the funding required to not only buy the franchise, but also to allow for working capital in the building phase of the franchise, which may be several months.
Have you found a franchisor that will provide a good level of training, support, guidance and mentoring to give the best start possible and who will give you the ongoing support you will need to ensure your business succeeds?
Will the franchisor give you the opportunity to spend time with an existing franchisee prior to any commitment to the selection of the franchise?
Have you had sight of a sample agreement and financial projections for your franchise territory?
Do the major banks know of the franchise and more importantly are they prepared to assist in the funding of the franchise?
Do you feel you are suitable for self-employment. Will you be happy running your own business?
Do you have the support of your family?
It is essential that in entering the world of franchising, it is done with a clear vision and realistic expectations.
If you are not prepared to give 100% commitment and effort then do not invest in a franchise.
